Start with simple projects like a basic tote bag, simple skirt, or knitted scarf rather than attempting complex garments. The pride of wearing something you made yourself is unmatched, and even imperfect handmade pieces often become treasured wardrobe favorites with character that mass-produced items lack.

โAs a new sewist(?), I found this project to be pleasantly challenging... after I got going. At first, I was worried it would be too thin and unsubstantial with my chosen fabrics, so I almost gave up. This is also the first bag project, and the first time I have worked with wool, a zipper, straps, interfacing, "quilting", etc. So, a lot to learn and work through! I am VERY surprised by how well it turned out, though. It is a soft bag, and I'm no pro, so it looks slightly lumpy here and there, but the overall impression is quite presentable. In fact, I would have used different fabric for the lining if I had known how nice the bag would look in the end, haha; I assumed it would be very amateurish, so I used floral fabric I wanted to get rid of! I don't mind it though, it's like a little surprise.โ
