Create a unique piece of clothing that fits your body perfectly and reflects your personal style, whether it's a simple skirt, tailored shirt, or cozy sweater. Start with basic patterns and forgiving fabrics like cotton, taking time to understand how garments are constructed. The pride of wearing something you made yourself—and having people ask "Where did you get that?"—is incredibly rewarding.

It was surprisingly ok. I made some fuckups with bad fabric choice (nope, viscose twill is not good for a beginner), but in general the few pieces that i've finished are wearable and they get positive feedback. I think that it is good to start with clothes that are not fitted, and can be made with basic materials. I have really enjoyed sewing loose shirt dresses with a simple linen canvas. They look nice, there is no worry that they wont fit. The very-very first dress i made (after few pillow cases etc.) was a crappy pattern (i had to redo shoulder line) and I had so many issues with flat seam that i made all the seams with biais tape and it was kinda stupid looking. Aaand the fabric was way uglier than in the shop. I wore it once, to make a point, felt like a frump.

Today was the first time I wore something I sewed out in public! It was a challenging project and it took me like 2 months to complete it but I am very happy with the finished product! I did this as part of a parent-baby sewing class I started as a way to stay sane during maternity leave. I learned so much about sewing and about being a mom during those classes, it’s the best thing I could have done for myself. The dress is finally complete and little one is starting daycare on Monday, and this all feels like the end of an era.
