Sip this anise-flavored spirit that turns milky white when mixed with water, traditionally enjoyed as an aperitif with mezze. The ritual of slowly adding ice water transforms the clear liquid into an opaque drink while releasing aromatic oils. Best enjoyed slowly at sunset with small plates of olives, cheese, and seafood while watching Greek life unfold around you.

β€œHowever, the first night we went out to dinner, the host said he was going to give us a drink on the house. Of course, they brought us Ouzo. Since we didn’t pay for it and it was sitting in front of us we decided to try it. Before, I try to explain how bad it tastes, let me just say the licorice aroma could be smelt from across the table. with nothing else on the table but water, we took the shot with immediate regret. It tasted like pure rubbing alcohol that has had a stink of licorice sitting in it for a year. Absolutely terrible.”

β€œAlthough they do serve wine, which is what I usually drink, when I am there I drink ouzo with plenty of ice and not so much water. The wine isn’t of the best quality unfortunately! If you have never tried it, it’s an aniseed-flavoured drink that should be treated with respect. If you have an ouzo hangover and drink water, you will rapidly find yourself in the same state as you were the night before.”
