Set a realistic, healthy target and focus on sustainable changes rather than crash diets or extreme workouts. Track your progress with both the scale and measurements since muscle weighs more than fat. The key is finding an eating and exercise routine you can stick with long-term, not just until you hit your number.

βI took up weightlifting after I had hit 165 lbs. I enjoy it a lot, but I have a lot of regrets related to my diet. Still today I really struggle to bulk and eat more, because the fear of gaining the weight back is always in my mind. My weight generally fluctuates between 170 and 190lbs, depending on if I'm on a bulk or a cut. One day I plan to bulk to 215/220lbs, but my mental headspace isn't there yet. I have counted calories every single day of the past 10 years. 99% of the time it was through meticulously weighing and/or tracking my food. The other 1% of the time it was mentally/guesstimating when circumstances wouldn't let me be meticulous (i.e on vacation). I've simply come to accept that my brain does not have an "I'm full, I don't want to eat anymore" button and if left to my own devices I WILL eat 5k/6k calories a day.β
βThe weight was falling off very quickly, and before I knew it I had reached my goal weight. The weight that was supposed to present me with an entirely new life, the one where all my problems would suddenly disappear. But that isnβt what happened at all, when I reached this goal weight and nothing in my life had improved, I decided I wanted to reach an even lower number. [...] During this time I had lost my period, my face was covered in cystic acne, I was suffering from insomnia, avoiding social situations in fear of having to deny food, and everything that I thought would happen when I reached my goal weight, still hadnβt happened.β
