Bite into New Orleans' iconic square donuts, best served hot and buried under a mountain of powdered sugar at Café du Monde. These French-inspired pastries are crispy outside, pillowy inside, and perfectly paired with strong café au lait while watching the Mississippi River flow by.

The beignets arrive piping hot and fresh. The outside has a nice crispness to it and the inside is soft, moist and chewy. My favorite part of the beignet are the four corners of the square. I enjoy cautiously balancing some powder sugar on them as I attempt to avoid any accidents transporting the sweet doughy goodness to my perked up taste buds. I am reminded of how difficult such a task is by the floor of the cafe which is covered in a thin layer of white powdered sugar from all the previous failed attempts.

Naturally, this was the first place I tried beignets in New Orleans, along with their renowned café au lait. Here, the beignets are crispy and slightly dense, offering a crunchier bite that’s heavier than others I’ve sampled. While not my personal favorite for beignets, they are undeniably good. However, their café au lait, enriched with chicory, is a standout and one of my favorites—it adds a unique depth of flavor that I highly recommend.

My first taste there was love at first bite. Despite the tempting menu, I stuck with the praline beignets due to a satisfying breakfast at Muriel’s earlier. These beignets were exceptional—light, airy, and perfectly sweet without being overpowering. I planned on having just one, but ended up devouring two.
