Hula hooping requires finding the right rhythm between your hips and the hoop's momentum – it's more about timing than strength. Start with a larger, heavier hoop which moves slower and is easier to control. Most people are surprised by how much core engagement it requires and how quickly it becomes addictive.

When I swung the hoop for the first time, it didn’t work at all, and you couldn’t really have called it a Hula-Hoop workout. After 10 minutes, that was it, and I didn’t feel like doing it anymore. The next day after work, I grabbed the hoop again; lo and behold, it worked. Rarely have I seen success so quickly, and the 10 minutes turned into 15.

I am 51 and I have never been able to hula hoop. Every time I try, it just falls down after a few spins. I thought I'd try to cross this one thing off my bucket list for 2026. I bought a $10 hoop from target. It's large, but super light. I have tried about 100 times, watched at least 10 YouTube videos and just cannot keep the darn thing up.

We were there for probably an hour, I remember turning with the hoop for the first time and feeling it slow down a little then launch itself around. Such a good feeling for the first time!
