Hula hooping provides a surprisingly effective core workout while being genuinely fun and nostalgic. Modern weighted hoops are easier to keep up than childhood versions and provide better fitness benefits. Start with basic waist hooping before trying arm, leg, or dance moves—it's a skill that improves quickly with practice.

I did learn to waist hoop with it but it was crazy difficult and I thought maybe hooping wasn’t going to be a hobby of mine after all. And then my 40″ beginner hoop arrived. Oh the joy of spinning a proper adult-sized hoop for the first time. That day all the other fitness equipment in the room I’d designated to be my home gym got piled up in the corner.

It only took me a few minutes to learn how to keep the hoop up, which surprised me. It also felt AWESOME. I accomplished something and hadn't felt that way in like, forever. Because the reward center of my brain lit up for the first time in maybe years, I continued hooping. Every day I would go out in my backyard and hula hoop for half an hour to an hour at a time.

I got the inspiration to begin hula-hooping in April, from pictures and videos of one of my friends having a great time hooping. It looked like something fun and I wanted to learn. From the kids section at Target, I bought two hula-hoops, one for me and one for my 2-year-old daughter (she’ll grow into it, right?). I tried it when I got home and failed miserably to keep the hoop around my waist. The hoops now sit outside unless my daughter plays with them.
