Channel your inner gymnast with this classic tumbling move that requires coordination, momentum, and a bit of courage. Start by practicing the individual components—hands down, kick over, land on feet. Find a soft surface like grass or carpet, and don't be discouraged if your first attempts look more like controlled falls.

I cannot do a cartwheel, not because I’m injured or unwell; I just can’t seem to pull it off. A couple weekends ago, I tried to imagine that my life depended on it (“Area Woman Forced to Do Cartwheels at Gunpoint”) and still: no go. I get my hands down, but when I try to swing my legs up and over, they’re like cement. It looks more like a weird pushup than a cartwheel.

I did a cartwheel yesterday. Actually, I did two. When was the last time you did a cartwheel? Honestly, I wasn’t even sure I still could. Part of me was bracing for a crash landing. I thought my arms might give out, or I’d end up in a heap of limbs and regret. But... I did it. Not just without injury, but with a touch of grace, even. It felt surprisingly good.
