“The first skill I learned was walking on a hand rail. I hadn't even really decided I wanted to learn parkour yet, I just thought it was cool. Then I noticed this long hand rail I passed every day on my way to and from class at Uni. It was firm and had thick grass on one side that I could bail into, so every time I passed it I made one attempt to take as many steps as I could. For a long time I rarely got more than three steps, five on a good day, but by the end of the semester I could walk the length, rotate my feet, and walk back without falling. That's all there is too it really, practice and progression.”
“After adding me to the class, we made our way to the garage-style gym: completely decked out with what looked like pillars and skate-board ramps. The instructor came in and we began our 5 minute warm-up. Do you know that feeling you get when you are on a roller coaster? You know, the one where you slowly ascend while the car gets even slower, just to build up the fear and anticipation of the first 90 degree drop? Yeah, that’s what I was feeling. We finished our warm-up. Let the work-out begin. Landing (jumping in place). “Ok, this isn’t so bad.” Shoulder rolls (rolling on the floor). “Not bad at all. I wonder if I look like an idiot.” Bounce back’s (where you bounce on a wall and land on the ground). “This is unique.” Precision jumping. “Alright, jumping from one place to another, this is kinda like kindergarten.” Safety vaults (as the name implies, safely vaulting over an object). “I feel like I’m getting better at this!”
