Now, it became very clear to me (and unfortunately those around me) that this was my first class. My classmates followed Julie’s silent cues with practiced ease, while I kept a trained eye on her at all times, not wanting to fall behind or appear uncoordinated. Eventually I caught on, but by that time, the song ended. [...] Before long, I was rolling my hips and bounding across the floor, following Julie’s cues and keeping my steps in time with hers. By the end, I was sweaty, happy, and ready to slink out of the room and into the cold winter’s night with my water bottle.

I was happy to see a variety of sizes and ages in the class. I expected the instructor to at least start off with something slow to warm us up. I wanted the warm-up so that I could get the creaking sound out of my knees that happens every time I bend or squat. No such luck! The music started and the instructor went hard quicker than I expected. There I was doing the two-step while I try to figure out how to get my legs and thighs to mimic the instructor. Finally, I caught on (just a little), and I was able to move at least in the same rhythm. I thought that I would have to sit down, but I didn’t. I made it through the whole class. It is an intense form of exercise and I think many may find it fun.

The music was very different than I am used to but it was a great change of pace for me. It was a mix of Latin, hip hop, and pop to keep the energy high. Zumba is a mix of all sorts of dance; Latin, jazz, rhythm, and everything in-between. For me it was mostly jiggling around but somehow I felt get doing it. Even though I love dancing I don’t have any rhythm to keep my on beat but the instructor would call out cue’s to move and it was really easy watching her in the mirror. [...] I laughed and had so much fun the entire 55 minutes of zumba my abs were sore from moving and laughing so much.
