The next step on my journey occurred when the gym I go to opened a new location with a boxing gym inside. My friend and I tried a class on a whim, and I almost instantly became obsessed. First of all the community is amazing, I’ve made so many new friends, and the workout of boxing challenges me unlike any other workout I’ve ever done before. I’ve been doing it for just under a year now and am planning on competing in my first fight next year! Boxing has taken my self respect and my self discipline to the next level, it is encouraging me to round out my fitness like never before in order to prepare for my fight, and I have made some amazing and wonderful connections with the people there.

In college, I remember using the weight machines, and getting a little muscle definition very early on, and being worried about looking "bulky," when exercise was, to my mind, entirely about becoming as small as you possibly could. Someone told me to just do cardio then, as it burned way more calories. I liked the weight machines more, but it wasn't about what I liked, so I dutifully tried the elliptical, a machine that felt like it might dislocate all my joints, and made me immediately bored and tired, but never made me feel like I had actually gotten a meaningful amount of exercise.

Started trying youtube workouts and was surprised they were also fun and gave me a challenge that I was craving and something new, I was getting faster- but I still felt "small" and "weak". Looking back I'm really happy I had the opportunity to try new workouts. It's really expanded my idea of fitness again to something beyond weightlifting.
